Based on a program of coordinated research on the modification of attitudes and beliefs through communication, this study analyzes the effectiveness of arguments and appeals, personality factors underlying susceptibility to persuasion, and the influence of social roles on resistance to acceptance of new ideas. The importance of motivation and the higher thought processes, their relevance to social influence in everyday life and the problems of effective mass communication are stressed. Chapter references.
