The Importance of Fraxinus Angustifolia Subsp. Oxycarpa as a Fast Growing Tree for Turkey [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
The industrihl plantations with fast growing trees are very important in closing the shortage of world wood raw material. These plantations have been mainly established with fast growing conifers. In recent years hardwood species however have been also used broadly in plantations. Ash species have become the one of the main species in hardwood plantations in Europe for their valuable wood and fast growing characteristics. Frarinus angustifolia has been increasingly used in plantations. This species has the maximum increment potential among Fraxinus species that spread in the forests of West Asia, Europe, and North America. In this study, the state and the importance of Frarinus angusgfolia subsp. oxycarpa in Turkey have been examined. Current natural Fraxinus angustifolia forest, its plantations, its potential sites, and the subject of raising the high value ash trees in Turkey have been studied. Although, the ash forests generally haven't got the necessary silvicultural treatments, its mean annual increment rate in favorable sites reaches to 20 m3/ha. Its site requirements limit its distribution in broad areas in Turkey. The plantations of F.a.subsp. oxycarpa in the appropriate potential sites with the silvicultural treatments needed, however, would contribute the big gains to the country by providing the wood raw material and by reducing the pressure on the natural forests. Private land owners should also be informed and encouraged for the Frarinus angustifolia plantations in and around farmlands.
