abstract   bibtex
Hypermedia is defined in this paper as a medium for managing relationships among information objects. Common hypermedia are what we consider complex computer programs running from CD-ROMs, computer hard disks, or the Internet. These programs involve computer interaction of text, graphics, video, and sound. RMM is a relationship management methodology that graphically describes the relationship of information objects using entity-relationship (ER) diagrams. The objective of the methodology in the design of hypermedia applications is to explicitly define menus, navigation buttons, entities, indexes to entities or menus, and the navigation paths between these items. The goal of RMM is to produce a relationship management data model (RMDM), which is a language for describing the information objects and the navigation mechanisms in hypermedia applications. Various hypermedia building kits are noted, such as Toolbook, HyperCard, and Macromedia Director. The New York University (NYU) information systems (IS) department is designing a suite of software tools to support design and development of RMM-based applications. A group at NYU is developing an RMDM-to-HTML compiler. As an example, an NYU IS department Web page designed using the RMM system is illustrated.
