Guillaume de Machaut and dissonance in fourteenth century French music. Jackson & (Author), R. Musica disciplina: A yearbook of the history of music, 53:7, January, 2003. abstract bibtex [Unedited] This study expands on two earlier articles concerning Machaut's 'harmony' by Gilbert Reaney by establishing a context (i.e., determining what Machaut acquired from his predecessors, Vitry or the Mass of Tournai composers, and what he seems to have passed along to his successors, Anthonello and Philippus de Caserta, Matteo da Perugia, and Goscalcus). The study treats (1) dissonances in individual voices, patterns of consonance and dissonance within breve durations; (2) dissonant clashes between voices, such as consecutive seconds; (3) dissonant intervals, such as the seventh, fourth, and second (or ninth), which have fixed resolutions; and (4) syncopated dissonances, such as retardations, suspensions, escape tones, and anticipations (using modern terminology).
