Is the True Score Model or the Factor Model More Appropriate? Response to Saris and Putte. Jagodzinski, W. & Kühnel Steffen und Schmidt, P. Sociological Methods & Research, 17:158-164, 1988. (ALLBUS)abstract bibtex "In their stimulating article, Saris and Putte (this volume) challenge two of our major findings (Jagodzinski and Kühnel, 1987; Jagodzinski et al., 1987). First, they deny our conceptualization of measurement error and dispute the existence of a Socratic effect. Second, they reject our attempt to measure a general underlying attitude that is stable across time and has an impact on a larger set of items. Rather, they assume that each of the four guest worker items is related to a specific option that is fairly unstable between the first and the second interview. In this comment, we discuss these topics. Since, in our view, no goodness of fit measures or other statistical criteria can discriminate between Sarin and Putte's models and our models, we must confine ourselves to some theoretical and methodological considerations."
