History of Philosophy: the Analytical Ideal. Janaway, C. Aristotelian. Society Supplementary, 1988.
abstract   bibtex
The paper formulates a set of methodological assumptions, Which can be extrapolated from certain works (notably strawson's "the bounds of sense") as an ideal which analytical philosophers have set themselves for the study of philosophy's history. It then argues that there are no good grounds for adhering to this ideal. In particular, The exclusion of historical reconstruction from the aims of the history of philosophy as studied by philosophers is argued to rest on no firm foundation and to lead to undesirable consequences. Richard rorty's views on rational reconstruction and historical reconstruction are criticized.
