A new and simple path loss model for the up/down links in LEO satellite communication systems is provided in the paper. It is different with traditional path loss models for urban peer-to-peer links in terrestrial. This model is considering dynamic topologies, handoffs, earth-satellite distance, operation frequency and other LEO satellite's parameters. On the one hand, we establish its theoretical model based on LEO constellation coverage theory and then analyze the numerical results that path loss changes with the parameters of LEO satellite constellation in details. On the other hand, an simulation system of Iridium communication on OPNET platform is presented. A large number of simulation results are conformed to the numerical results. They both demonstrate the validity and reliability of the path loss model in this paper. It is very useful for LEO satellite link design.
