	abstract = {Graupner (1683-1760) became assistant director of court music at Darmstadt in 1709 and director in 1711. In his early Darmstadt years, Italian operas were performed far more frequently than church cantatas. Eventually operatic activity ceased as a result of financial pressures. Thereafter Graupner dedicated himself primarily to composing church cantatas (more than 1400 are preserved, for the most part in the Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek Darmstadt). The 47 cantatas for Advent are examined, with special attention to the arias and to how outward circumstances — finances, the state of Darmstadt court opera, and the availability of particular performers — influenced their musical features.},
