Implications of weed genetics and ecology for the deliberate release of genetically-engineered crop plants. Keeler, K., H. Recombinant DNA Technical Bulletin, 8(4):165-172, 1985. abstract bibtex Weeds are variously defined. Generally they are plants interfering with the objectives and requirements of people. Frequently these plants are early successional or colonizing species, although a complete list includes a wide variety of plants, from annuals on freshly disturbed sites to persistent unpalatable perennials in pastures. From the viewpoint of genetic engineering of plants, the group of most immediate concern are weeds of croplands. These will be in constant contact with the genetically engineered crops that will dominate next century's agriculture. While other types of weeds may be of concern to environmental release, this discussion will focus on weeds of crop plants.
