[Excerpt] Pyrus castribonensis is assessed as Data Deficient as it is a preliminary accepted species in Euro+Med PlantBase and its taxonomic status therefore requires verification. [::Taxonomic Notes] Pyrus castribonensis Raimondo & al. is a wild relative of pear, P. communis L. ssp. communis. It is a preliminary accepted species in Euro+Med PlantBase (Kurtto 2009). [::Range Description] P. castribonensis is endemic to Sicily (Kurtto 2009). [::Countries] Native:Italy (Sicilia) [::Population] It is a rare species known from seven localities – one of them with less than 10 individuals, five of them with 10 to 20 individuals and one with more than 20 (Raimondo et al. 2006). [::Habitat and Ecology] It is found near agricultural fields in clay soil, near woods of Quercus suber, as well as cultivated stands of Fraxinus excelsior and Olea europaea. It is also found in the margins of Pistacio-Rhamnetalia alaterni, Quercetalia ilicis and Prunetalia spinosae vegetation. [::Use and Trade] It is a wild relative of and potential gene donor to pear, P. communis ssp. communis. It is also as a rootstock for P. communis. [::Major Threat(s)] It is threatened by human activities, changes in land use, fires and grazing pressure.
