In this paper the relationship between field and circuit theory is examined. We exploit the dualism of electromagnetism and orthogonal decompositions of square integrable fields to find a natural coupling between external circuits and field problems. The proposed approach is easy to implement on the discrete level. Although the paper relies on algebraic topology and differential geometry, all ideas are explained in terms of classical vector analysis
