Seventeen (28.3%) and 21 (14.6%) patients showed tumor recurrence in the MS and non-MS groups, respectively (P=0.022). In addition, disease-free survival of patients in the MS group was less than in non-MS group (P=0.036). The Cox regression hazard model demonstrated that advanced tumor stage (stage III or IV, HR=17.8, 95% CI=5.3 to 59.4) and presence of MS (HR=2.8, 95% CI=1.3 to 5.8) were independent risk factors for recurrence. CONCLUSION MS may be an important prognostic factor for gastric cancer. Control of MS could improve the therapeutic efficacy of gastric cancer.
