The article focuses on the paradox of mimetic figuration as discussed in the story "Life of Moses" by theologian Saint Gregory of Nyssa. The article discusses the discrepancies between the reality of the story of Moses and his engagement with "material mimesis," mimetic figuration as a practice of representation and hermeneutic engagement with God according to Gregory and theologian Origen and the use of figures and tropes to shape perception in the Scriptures. The article goes on to discuss writings of philosopher Erich Auerbach and modern aesthetics.
