Ample negatives. Lawler, J. M. Chicago Linguistic Society (CLS), 10:357 – 377, January, 1974.
abstract   bibtex
An analysis accounting for sentences possessing an abnormal number of negatives in their surface structure is offered. Several types of sentences are represented in this class. The ways in which these sentences are abnormal is discussed 1st. The question of why such sentences occur at all is examined, & it is established that it is very important to communicate negation. Phenomena like polarity items & 'non-standard' multiple negation exist, among other reasons, to increase redundance & insure that the negative message gets communicated. One further way is to impose a constraint on surface structures that allows negatives to be retained in surface structure when they would ordinarily be deleted. The constraint is that if the negative that would ordinarily command the element is moved out, another must be provided in the proper relationship. J. Schwarz
