Cradle to cradle: the ecology of trucking. Leavitt, W. Trucking Technology, 1996.
abstract   bibtex
The concept of a true 'cycle' is receiving new attention from scientist and industry leaders struggling to reconcile economic prosperity with environmental imperative. Using Nature as the blueprint and the technology as the tool, they are working to construct a sustainable system, where trucks and other products are considered from manufacturing through their working life to recycle and manufacture again. To bring this issue into a sharper focus, the relationship between vehicles and the environment is examined noting that about 10% of the environmental impact of vehicles occurs at the time of manufacture and another 10% at the end of working life, 'while fully 80% of environmental influence happens during operation'. This 10-80-10 ratio is useful way to think about new sustainable environmental/economic business model for the trucking industry which appears to be starting.
