Telecommunication-grade optical fibers are commonly used in sensing applications. Their flexibility, size and reliability are valuable assets for their use in biosensing, especially inside catheters. In this work, we gather our recent achievements towards the production of robust plasmonic fiber gratings biosensors, to provide in vivo diagnostic. To this aim, we first report lung cancer biomarkers detection in laboratory settings and a preliminary test performed on a fresh human lobectomy. The biosensing experiments were performed near the operating room, thanks to a portable optical interrogation set-up. Results show higher biosensing responses in cancerous tissues compared to healthy lung.
