Leitmotif, Cyclicity, and Mythical Storytelling in The Legend of Zelda [link]URL  abstract   bibtex   3 downloads
Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda is one of the best selling video game franchises in the world, spanning nearly four decades of constant releases, and has created a substantial collection of soundtracks. Zelda games very rarely share narrative threads between titles; each game can effectively be considered its own narrative universe. However, shared elements across many different games, including characters, items, motivations, and locations, imply Zelda to be one story told again and again with each new game, suggesting a notion of mythological storytelling; this notion is further supported with familiar music in different games. This thesis seeks to interrogate the common understanding of leitmotif by applying it to a franchise whose narrative structure differs greatly from other leitmotivic franchises. Through analyses of a set of games representative of Zelda, we will investigate how leitmotif in Zelda serves to reinforce the series’ cyclical and mythological styles of storytelling.
