Through the evocation of personal experiences in nature this essay and its accompanying technical and documentary materials investigate the meaning of preservation in relation to memory and the environment as inspirations for the aesthetics and structure of Alan Mackwell’s thesis composition Still Country. Additionally included are descriptions of the multimedia aspects of the work, including the development and utilization of field recordings as a compositional and artistic tool; the structure of the narrative text; the functions of software; and how all of these components combined over the course of time to facilitate the creation and performance of Still Country.
