In this paper an interdisciplinary study towards the development of adaptive lighting environments is presented, involving experts from the domains of human-system interaction, activity and context recognition, and system architecture design. The goal of this work is to explore the design options and technical challenges for adaptive lighting environments from an interdisciplinary perspective, in the domain of 'office environments'. Two significant contributions are made with regard to the implementation of adaptive lighting in office environments and an evaluation method that is in line with the interdisciplinary approach. A qualitative study was performed with experts from three different disciplines to extrapolate joint research areas for further investigation. Our main findings are described with regard to the three involved fields.
