Diospyros virginiana, the American persimmon, is a widespread tree species of eastern North America that is well known for its edible fruit. The first written description of persimmon is found in the narratives of the De Soto expedition of 1539-1543, and early European accounts typically characterized it as a type of plum (Prunus sp.) or medlar (Mespilus germanica L.) based on the appearance of the fruits. However, persimmon is of only minor importance as a source of timber, as it seldom attains commercial dimensions or occurs in large stands.
