The article analyzes literary theorist Geoffrey Hartman's views about representation in literature as discussed in the essay "A Touching Compulsion" published in the 1977 issue of "The Georgia Review." Topics discussed include Hartman's discussion of the role of psychoanalysis in providing a greater understanding of literature, his comparison of poets William Wordsworth and William Blake's ideals with regards to reality and Hartman's views on the advantages of remaining unsure.
