[first paragraph] In this paper, I explore a neglected puzzle due to Gilbert Ryle. 1 Section 1 presents Ryle's puzzle and discusses its potential significance for metaethics. In Sections 2 and 3, I examine and criticize a number of proposed solutions to the puzzle, including Ryle's own. In Section 4, I develop and defend a novel solution.
