An essay is presented in which the author discusses legal rhetoric in the U.S. through a review of books about court cases that have shaped a national identity. The author points out that the legal rhetoric from these court cases should be questioned by citizens to determine whether they are valid and just for U.S. society. The court cases reviewed in the books discuss the impact of legal rhetoric on the subjects of womanhood and women's rights, citizenship, race, and eugenics in the U.S.
