It addresses the importance of interventions directed at changing intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community, and public policy factors that support and maintain unhealthy behaviors. Examples of health promotion interventions that use interpersonal strategies include drug use prevention programs and adolescent pregnancy prevention. Organizational factors include supports for behavior change and influences on program diffusion. Community factors address the community as a mediating structure, as the relationship among organizations, or as a geographical area. The model assumes that appropriate changes in the social environment will produce changes in individuals and that the support of individuals in the population is essential for implementing environmental changes.
