This paper reports the results of an all-optical switching experiment in a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating. A low power, continuous wave, probe beam is switched off (on) by an intense pump beam. The experiment used a 2-mm-long Gaussian apodized phase-shifted grating with a 450-MHz wide notch at 1550 nm. The strong enhancement of the nonlinear effect due to the group velocity reduction and the switching polarization dependence was observed and theoretically confirmed.
