New data on the Reina Codex & its contents. Milette, G., A., (. 1, 1995.
abstract   bibtex
The Reina Codex is an important source of late 14th- and early 15th-c. secular music containing works by Jacopo da Bologna, Bartolino da Padova, Francesco Landini, Guillaume de Machaut, Jaquemin de Senleches, Gilles Binchois, and Guillaume Dufay. Despite its recognized significance, however, it has received little attention from music scholars in the past 30 years. Furthermore, existing research on the MS is replete with contradictions and unanswered questions. These problems are addressed through critical re-examination of existing scholarship and analysis of Reina and some of its contents. As a result, the MS's structure, dates, history, origins, and genesis are clarified, two new scribes are uncovered, several works by Bartolino and Dufay are firmly placed and dated, and composers of many anonymous 15th-c. works are identified. This new data has important implications for our understanding of this varied repertoire and its transmission and cultivation in Northern Italian centers during the period 1380-1435.
