Responses of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) to exploitation at the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario [pdf]Paper  abstract   bibtex
Two unexploited lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) populations were intensively fished and then monitored for at least four years after exploitation to determine growth and recruitment responses to exploitation, and the duration of these responses. Lake whitefish growth increased for two years in the population where 26% of the adults were removed and it increased far three years in the population where 40% of the adults were removed Recruitment increased in each exploited population. Exploiting lake whitefish populations in smaller lakes at regular intervals is a viable method of commercially utilizing these smaller stocks without causing the stocks to collapse.
