Condition, recruitment, and abundance of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) in a fertilized acid lake. Mills, K., H., Chalanchuk, S., M., Findlay, D., L., Allan, D., J., & McCulloch, B., R. Advances in Limnology 57: Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes - 1999, 57:423-433, 2002.
Paper abstract bibtex We tested whether phosphorus additions to an acid lake increased condition, recruitment, and abundance of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) in Lake 302N, the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario. The lake was first acidified for 10 years to pH 5.2 and then phosphorus was added in weekly additions for two years. Primary productivity and algal biomass increased during years of fertilization and decreased after fertilization ceased. Lake whitefish recruitment increased 5-fold during the years of phosphorus additions and this caused abundance to increase almost 10-fold. Condition of lake whitefish decreased slightly during fertilization, but this was likely a density-dependent response to the abundance increase. Condition, recruitment, and abundance returned to baseline values three years after phosphorus additions ceased.
