Conservatoire Students' Perceptions of the Characteristics of Effective Instrumental and Vocal Tuition. Mills, J. Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, 2002. abstract bibtex Individual tuition on an instrument or in singing forms the core of undergraduate courses at the nine conservatoires in the UK, with several thousand lessons taking place each week of the academic year. This study, in one conservatoire, investigates undergraduates' perceptions of the characteristics of the individual instrumental or vocal tuition that they find effective. These characteristics are not controversial, but appear to be embedded in teaching styles that may not all transfer readily to the wider-ranging instrumental teaching that conservatoire graduates often undertake as part of a portfolio career.
