Growth, size, structure, and annual survival of Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) during the eutrophication and oligotrophication of Lake 226, the Experimental Lakes Area, Canada [pdf]Paper  abstract   bibtex
Nutrients were added to the two basins of artificially separated Lake 226. the Experimental Lakes Area, from 1973 to 1980. The east basin received phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon additions while the west basin received nitrogen and carbon additions. Lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) were studied in each basin during the 8 years of nutrient additions and the 14 years subsequent to these additions. Lake whitefish growth increased during eutrophication of the east basin and decreased during the ensuing oligotrophication. Decreases were more pronounced and occurred earlier for larger than for smaller individuals. Annual survival of lake whitefish decreased and the number of larger individuals decreased during oligotrophication in the east basin.
