Towards a resolution of comparative anaphora: A corpus study of other. Modjeska, N. N. Broccias, C., Nissim, M., & Sanso, A., editors. Semantics Inside and Outside the Clause.
abstract bibtex
This paper reports on a first-pass annotation exercise and analysis of a corpus of examples of other-NPs – that is, NPs modified by the comparative other, as in other European steelmakers. Such NPs have an anaphoric component that must be resolved – ``other steelmakers than which ones?''. Statistical data derived from this study have uncovered significant patterns that can be used to constrain search space and determine the correct antecedents of other-NPs. Developing efficient resolution algorithms for comparative anaphoric expressions is the applied goal of this project.
