Explored the possibility that visual impairments contribute to developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Ocular performance of 29 Scottish children (aged 5-7 yrs) diagnosed as having DCD by the Movement Assessment Battery for Children of S. E. Henderson and D. A. Sugden (1992), and 29 age-matched controls was assessed with a battery of ophthalmic tests. Measures of vision/visual acuity (Bates-Lovie Chart), ocular-motor balance (Cover Test, Mallett Distance Test, Near Units and Stereopsis Tests), near point convergence, ocular mobility, pupillary reactions, ophthalmoscopy, refraction, amplitude of accommodation, central visual fields, and color vision were obtained for all Ss. Analysis did not reveal any significant difference in visual status between the 2 groups. It was concluded that simple ophthalmic difficulty does not explain problems with movement control in children with DCD.
