Prunus ilicifolia is a native of the California Floristic Province with extensions into the central Baja California peninsula, Mexico. It consists of two subspecies - P. ilicifolia subsp. ilicifolia, which occurs on the mainland of California extending into northern Baja California del Norte, and P. ilicifolia subsp. lyonii (Catalina cherry or island cherry), which occurs on several of the Channel Islands off the coast of southern California and in a disjunct population in Baja California del Sur.
