Isotopic geochemistry of natural waters from the Alpi Apuane-Garfagnana area, northern Tuscany, Italy. Mussi, M., Leone, G., & Nardi, I. Mineralogica et Petrographica Acta, 41:168 - 178, 1998. abstract bibtex The isotopic composition, delta (super 2) H and delta (super 18) O, and tritium content of spring and rain waters of the Alpi Apuane-Garfagnana area, NW Tuscany, Central Italy, were studied. This is an area characterised by the presence within a few kilometres of two chains of mountains parallel both to each other and to the coastline, with altitudes from sea level to about 2000 m. This study enabled a useful reconstruction of the local distribution of the isotopic composition of rainfall starting from that measured in surface waters in a period of about two years, with a limited number of samplings per single station. The data obtained showed the presence of altitudinal isotopic gradients lower than those usually found and with some differences among them. This is most probably due to the rather particular arrangement of the relief and to the preferential direction of atmospheric disturbances. Some analyses of Cl (super -) content also confirm this observation and the sea spray origin of this element. A critical analysis of the data from some springs showed the possibility of using the parameter "d", excess of deuterium, to estimate the origin of single meteorological events and tritium content, together with delta (super 2) H and delta (super 18) O, to assess recharge times and characteristics of the hydrological circuit.
