Toward a New Understanding of the Chronicler and His Purposes [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
The scholarly consensus concerning Chronicles is that it constitutes a literary unit with Ezra and Nehemiah and that this corpus dates from approximately 400 B.C. Upon examination of four categories (the portrait in Chronicles of the Davidic king as prophet, the understanding in Chronicles of Judah's relation to the world, the Chronicler's theology of history, and the forms of prophetic discourse in Chronicles), the conclusion is reached that Chronicles is by a different hand than Ezra and Nehemiah and that its provenance was among those who, with the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, urged the rebuilding of the Temple, thus implying a date of about 520 B.C.
