	abstract = {The Southern Appalachian region has been chosen for the development of a prototype action program for the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program in North America. The existing biosphere reserves of the area, Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory and Great Smoky Mountains National Park, are described, along with Oak Ridge National Environmental Research Park, which has been nominated for biosphere reserve status. The history of MAB programs in the region is discussed, along with plans for the future, which include the establishment of a coordinating organization consisting of agencies and institutions dedicated to the establishment of collaborative efforts associated with MAB program.},
