Trade union organization and skill in the cotton and engineering industries in Britain, 1850-1960. Penn, R. Social History, 8(1):37–55, January, 1983.
abstract   bibtex
Discusses the relations between skilled and unskilled manual workers in the British cotton and engineering industries, 1850-1960, as expressed in union organization, using evidence mainly from southeast Lancashire, especially Rochdale and Oldham. There was throughout the period active organization of the skilled workers in both industries in support of economic differentials, relative status, and control over machine production; this was aided by competition among firms in the local labor market. Skill in the cotton industry was only ended with the destruction of the industry in the 1950's, but persisted in engineering. The idea of progressive "deskilling" needs to be modified in the light of local conditions.
