In the New Culture Movement (around the time of the May 4th Movement in 1919), the famous metaphor about Chinese women was "Nola's leaving home". Luxun had once asked: What will happen after Nola's leaving? The answer should be "Either to be a prostitute, or to come back to home." In the 1930's Shanghai, while urban space developed, people's emotion structure and the imagination also had the new transformation. There were a group of writer called "new sensationalist school" who created "modern girl", and the image soon expanded to the cinema, the drawing and the mass media. Compare with Nola who is no way to feed herself, "modern girl" means materiality foundation of women's independence. Though "modern girl" was a symbol created by the man who occupied the society's dominant position, it has the clue to research the 1930's semi-colonial city modernity and the spatial constitution. In the 1950's, "modern girl" was cleaned off and disappeared from all kinds of culture media because it seemed as the typical symbol of bourgeoisie culture. At that time the popular female figure was "the iron girl" who could undertake the difficult work just like man. The novelist created an image called "Shanghai girl". In the story, "Shanghai girl" go to the border area and do a lot of hard work to support the "new China". Though she was suspected still remained some shortcoming belongs to "modern girl", she was finally understood and accepted by the people. And all the story symbolized the Shanghai urban space had been transform into models for socialism. In contemporary time, the space of colonial time and socialism time is mixed into one city of Shanghai, it has formed the diversely characteristics of the city's culture. We shall use more complex manner to treat the new women image appeared, such as "Shanghai baby", which is continued the style of "modern girl" but refuses to undertake any kind of historical burden. The paradox gives us some kind of enlightenment to inspect the vicissitude of Shanghai urban space further.
