Review of Sonic Boom Theory [pdf]Paper  doi  abstract   bibtex
A review is presented of sonic boom theory, covering three viewpoints: historical perspective, an exposition of established boom theory and special phenomena, and the theoretical needs of current sonic boom problems. The review is intended to serve as a tutorial for the nonspecialist as well as a review of the current state-of-the-art and open issues. The greatest interest in sonic boom was associated with SST projects of the 1960s, and much of sonic boom theory has been shaped by that influence. Major elements of sonic boom analysis have been well established into what may be called standard theory. Current sonic boom problems require elements beyond standard theory, including the influence of hypersonic speeds, better integration of sonic boom analysis into the aircraft design process, and a more complete understanding of focal zones.
