Palgrave Macmillan, 2019. abstract bibtex Responsibility and relative independence in decision making increasingly mean that principals need to be considered as part of a profession, defined by appropriate qualifications and selection procedures. In this chapter, different solutions to the recruitment, selection and education of principals are explored. This comparative overview is based on secondary data from a variety of countries, grouped according to the characteristics of the socio-economic and educational environments. The findings are evaluated by using the framework(s) developed by previous comparative educational studies, as well as national research. The recommendations are further considered in the context of the systematic professionalisation of principals, which includes the development of professional organisations and their control over professional standards and the education of principals, and in raising the social status of principals.
