Special environmental mitigation measures are planned for the 170 MW Baixo Sabor multipurpose scheme in Portugal, which is to be implemented within a 'Natura 2000' site. The authors describe the environmental assessment process for the scheme, and demonstrate how various environmental issues were integrated during the project development phase. Details are given of the compensatory and mitigation measures which are planned, which will in fact enhance the area, particular as regards habitats for various species of animal and birds.
