Estimating Local Alcohol and Other Drug Use from National Household Survey of Drug Abuse Rates and Census Population Data. Ritchey, Neal, P., & Ritchey, L. H. 1994. abstract bibtex To supplement survey information \& local drug use indicators (eg, drug related arrests or hospital emergency room admissions), or in the absence of local surveys, national age sex rates of drug use can be adjusted to a region \& used with census data to develop local drug use counts. This procedure is described, \& estimates are presented for alcohol, cigarette, marijuana, \& any illicit drug use for an 8 county region in northern KY, using rates from the 1990 Household Survey of Drug Use \& projecting 1995 rates. This allows assessment of the impact of changing age sex composition on drug use for local drug use indicators. Plans for using future national drug use rates with local population projections for developing local estimates of trends in drug use are outlined as part of the evaluation efforts of a community partnership grant to combat substance use \& abuse.
