Factors controlling rates of methane oxidation and the distribution of the methane oxidizers in a small stratified lake [pdf]Paper  abstract   bibtex
Rates of methane oxidation in a small eutrophic Canadian Shield lake were found to be governed largely by thermal stratification, which controlled the rates of mixing of dissolved oxygen and methane. Oxygen concentration was also an important control factor. Concentrations in excess of 1.0 mg/l inhibited methane oxidation. Methane concentration was a control factor only at oxygen concentrations of less than 1.0 mg/l in a narrow lens of activity which occurred in the metalimnion during summer stratification. Temperature and pH were not usually important controlling factors. A new strain of methane oxidizing bacteria, characterized as being a psychrophilic microaerophiles, appears to be responsible for the methane oxidation in this lake.
