Our environment is rapidly filling with different kinds of intelligent appliances that use computer technology. This development has been fast. It is the outcome of cheap electronics and the fast increase of available processor power. There is a vision of the future, how the environment will be filled with computer technology helping people in doing their everyday tasks. This vision is called ubiquitous computing. In this diploma thesis, the focus is on one of the research problems arising from the idea of ubiquitous computing, namely context-awareness. The main idea in context-awareness is to provide applications with information of the context around the user or her device. However, context is in nature so ambiguous that it is in practise impossible to describe it exactly. Therefore, in real life applications, context must be approximated somehow. A small investement in context-awareness can provide very useful and seemingly intelligent applications. This thesis was done in the CAPNET research project. The project focuses broadly on the area of ubiquitous computing. As a result of this thesis, a system was developed for managing context-information, as a part of bigger Capnet software architecture. The system has a functionality for acquiring and analysing sensor information. It provides an easy access to context information for applications via a simple programming model. In addition to the context management, context-aware applications were developed to use the system. Together these applications provide the functionality to implement an application scenario that was behind this work.
