Alpine migration is normally viewed as a strategy employed in modern times to confront mountain crises and is related to the prehistoric Mesolithic economy, where the men were hunters and the women either gatherers or proto-farmers. As a result, the dual male-female economy of Alpine regions is also a structural reality, with men migrating and women engaged in rearing and farming (summer pasture economy).
