The Buddhist monastic texts that have come down to us refer to, and appear to authorize, several monastic practices seemingly meant to ensure safe childbirth or to cure sick children. Such references or authorizations are not always as full or detailed as one might like, and sometimes they remain obscure. A curious text in the Pāli Vinaya—which has a partial parallel in the Bodhirājakumāra-sutta in the Majjhima-nikāya—is a good example.¹ In both the Sutta and Vinaya versions the text opens with Prince Bodhi inviting the Buddha to his newly constructed palace for a meal, and he requests the
