[Excerpt] This species has a fairly small range, but it is reported to readily colonise open spaces. No major threats are reported to be impacting upon this species. It is therefore assessed as Least Concern. However, further research is recommended to determine the population of this species within its range. [::Common Name(s)] [::]English - Japanese Cherry Birch [::Range Description] The species~is found on the three southern islands of Japan.~Its range extends from north Honshu southwards to Shikoku and Kyushu, reaching higher elevations in the South. It does not occur in Hokkaido or on the mainland of Asia. [::Countries] Native:Japan (Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku) [::Population] There is no population information available for this species. [::Habitat and Ecology] This species is a large tree to 25 m found in mixed woodlands on hill and mountain sides; it does not form a pure stand. It is an early colonizing species following disturbance in forest dominated by beech (Fagus crenata). It will thrive in any good, rich and well-drained soil.
