The classical index in the Internet age [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
Xu Shu reviews the way in which the classical printed index has responded to technological developments of the last 20 years or so, and charts the swing towards the alternatives offered by web retrieval tools and searchable databases. These are popular with users and providers alike, and for many purposes offer a good service. But, she argues, they fall short of what the specialist researcher requires, not least when it comes to unearthing implicit information. The answer, she suggests, is for indexers to come into play as intermediaries, using their skills to mine, sort and focus the information and gradually to add ancillary tools to aid the user.
