After establishing the cosmological context for galaxy formation and the role of dark matter, the properties of intergalactic gas and of high-redshift galaxies are reviewed. The systematic differences along the Hubble sequence observed in zero-redshift galaxies are discussed together with the possible underlying physics that determines the presence of otherwise of a disk.
