[first paragraph] The past is in front of us, the future behind. For we can perceive what is before us, if we will, but the future is in the shadows, more properly an object of anticipation, hope or dread than of knowledge. In our remembering we can try to exercise that just attention towards other persons and the past which is a kind of love and a strengthening of our inwardness, our sense of identity: where we have come from, and how we think of where we have come from, are important elements in who we are. The idea that education might be centrally concerned with the cultivation of memory is seldom taken seriously any more, of course; but what of a kind of knowing that is direct, concrete, personal and linked to the individual's sense of his own identity?
